A question from Kerry Prutzman

Hi Frank, I just wanted to let you know how much I love your book "Born Round." I'm laughing and crying. It is just a wonderful book for everyone, not just those of us who have struggled with weight. When I read the end of chapter 13 where you write, "beginning a diet and exercise program on Monday only to stop it on Wednesday, because I'd slip up and decide I should wait until the following Monday and the blank slate of a new week to begin again. Then I'd treat Thursday through Sunday as a free pass, a last-hurrah opportunity to get all my cravings out of my system." I laughed, because that is me, I do that all the time. Everyone knows you can't start a diet on any day but a Monday right? And if you're going to start a diet on Monday you need to eat all of the goodies you'll be depriving your self of the Sunday before you start your major diet on Monday. Thank you Frank, for being so honest and for inspiring me to finally just get healthy.

Answer:

I'm so glad you related to that. I wanted to take people through the sort of thought processes that those of us who WANT to lose weight but have such trouble doing so, or are gripped by such a countervailing desire to EAT, go through all the time. The must-start-on-Monday is just one of the many tricks and rationalizations by which we give ourselves passes. It's an insidious thing, the human mind. Almost as insidious as the human gut! Have a great holiday season, and so sorry I was out of answering-questions mode for so long.
